Ask around
Word of mouth is often the best way to uncover true talent. If an artist's skills are awesome, you'll be the first to hear about it.

Hit the mall

Salons often offer special makeup application services for promgoers. But the top salons fill up fast, so reserve early.

Get a sneak preview
There's nothing wrong with asking for a makeover sneak peek. After all, you want to see what you'll look like before the big night rolls around. Your best bet for a free preview is the cosmetics counter at your local department store. If you choose to go to a salon or an independent makeup artist, you'll probably be asked to pay a small fee for a trial run. Make sure you bring a trusted friend for that all-important second opinion.

Know what you want
Cut out photos from fashion magazines or grab shots of your fave celebs to give the makeup artist an idea of what you want. It’s a lot easier than trying to explain it.

Stage a dress rehearsal
