Longtime couple Jen and Keith decided to do away with the formalities of asking each other to prom this year -- they both just assumed they'd be going together. In fact, it became a joke of sorts. In the weeks before prom Jen teasingly told Keith that he'd have to ask her or else he'd have to find another date! And he'd kid around right back by asking, "Who are you going with?"
SHE IS: Jen, 18, Senior HER DATE IS: Keith, 18, Senior DAY OF PROM: May 6 THE SCHOOL: Buffalo High School, Buffalo, Minnesota THE SCENE: St. Cloud Civic Center, St. Cloud, Minnesota
AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR "We were horrible with planning," Jen admits. "Talk about procrastinators!" Keith ordered his tux a mere one week before prom -- and Jen didn't find her dress until two weeks before. By her count, Jen tried on at least 100 dresses. Eventually, she found the one, and she ended up ordering her size by phone from Macy's. She split the cost of the Jessica McClintock black-and-white dress with her mom. "[My mom] had told me," she says, "if she liked it, she'd pay $100 [toward the cost of the dress], which made it a lot easier for me to buy it." Jen goes on to say, "I'm not much of a budget kinda girl. I'll use whatever it takes, even if I have to borrow." Still, she saved on the cost of shoes by wearing the same pair she's been wearing to formal events for the past four years.
PRE-PROM PAMPERING Before prom, Jen treated herself to a decadent manicure and pedicure but wasn't exactly thrilled with the results. "One of my nails was already chipped by prom!" she gripes. Luckily, she was considerably happier when it came to her makeup. Her friend had let her borrow a makeup how-to book, and she copied a smoky-eyed look. "I was really satisfied," Jen tells us. She headed to the salon for her hair, because she really wanted to stand out. Jen gave her stylist the green light to do whatever she wanted, and the result was a relaxed but romantic updo. Jen wore Victoria's Secret Pink fragrance for the evening.
THE BIG NIGHT Instead of dealing with the stress of a limo ("We're not exactly friends with the same people," Jen explains), Keith borrowed his boss's red sports car for the evening, and the couple drove to an Italian restaurant to meet a group of Jen's friends. After dinner, Jen and Keith headed to the dance, which was held in a ballroom at the St. Cloud Civic Center. Elegantly decorated with white tablecloths and gorgeous flowers on each table, the room boasted a huge dance floor, if not much else. The theme of the dance was originally "It's Getting Hot in Here," based on Nelly's hit, but Jen tells us that was axed. "The principal found out [the next line] was 'so take off all your clothes' and threw that idea away. I can't remember what the theme ended up being." Jen and Keith hit the floor to the tunes of a DJ, and spent their prom downtime at a table with friends.
AFTER THE PROM... When the dance ended, Jen and Keith drove off in the cool borrowed car to Keith's sister's apartment, to say hello and spend the rest of the night reminiscing about the evening. When asked what her favorite memory of prom was, Jen decides it was probably the pre-prom dinner. "I was surrounded by my friends," she remembers "We had a fun time laughing and talking about memories. It was great!"
